The compact FieldTrainer 425X is ideal for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with dogs that hunt close.
Our friends at SportDOG have excelled once again at making their standard even better. Introducing the X-Series: new technology built on the same solid platform you know and trust. The FieldTrainer 425X is the first the new series. The biggest difference being that this training collar now offers 21 levels of stimulation at your fingertips.
If you’re familiar with the standard 425 Field Trainer, you’ll remember the intensity dial from 1-7. The 425X provides the same dial, but now gives you Low, Medium, and High for each number on the dial. This allows you so much more control and a greater degree of precision to get the exact response from your dog. Not too hard, not too soft, but just right. As with its predecessor, the 425X still offers Vibrate and Tone, an extremely useful feature.
Lightweight, compact, and dependable.
The FieldTrainer 425X is not necessarily an entry level model, since it contains all the features of any professional e-collar, however its ease of use (and price tag) is perfect for anyone new to e-collar training. The 425X is also the smaller of the X-Series products, which provides a compact and lightweight option suitable for small dogs (8-10lbs) or for young dogs just starting out.
The 500-yard range is ideal for close working dogs, mainly retrievers, and for anyone who needs that “around the house” training or heading out to the park.
Add up to 3 dogs to the remote system, and instantly switch stimulation modes.
The FieldTrainer 425X can be used up to a 3-dog system, and is “backwards compatible” with the older 425 collar receivers, the SDR-AF model, meaning the original 425 collars can deliver the same 21 levels of stimulation that the new 425X offers.
The SDR-AF is also the Add-A-Dog collar model offered when ordering a 2 or 3-dog unit. You do lose a few of the transmitter’s extra features when adding additional collars (see the operating guide for details). The newer SDR-AXF collar receiver will be available from SportDOG later this year, which should include a slightly smaller design and an updated color and finish to match the 425X transmitter.
Switch instantly between stimulation, vibration, and tone to fit the correction or communication to your dog’s temperament and learning ability. Both the Transmitter and Receiver are waterproof and submersible. It comes as a 1-dog system, but can be expanded to control up to 3 dogs by adding SportDOG Brand Add-A-Dog™ collars.
The comfortable, ergonomic transmitter weighs only 4.0 ounces, making this unit a pleasure to handle. This 425 Model is an upgraded replacement for the SportDOG Field Trainer 400.

Great features of the SportDOG FieldTrainer 425X include:- ExcellentBy:Jessica O’Brien
This collar works great on our year and a half old Golden Retriever. We’ve tried a few other collars that haven’t been consistent or worked overtime. Really happy that this collar has multiple static levels and that you don’t have to take this collar off when we go to dog beach since our dog loves to swim. We love having him off leash and knowing this collar works so well gives us peace of mind that we have full control over him even off leash. Highly recommend this collar, it has helped tremendously. I am usually pretty adept at setting up anything technical but the documentation on this was so confusing. I finally had to call in and she was so very helpful and got it set up so quickly!! I'm not crazy about the level of vibration because I have deaf dogs and I need stronger vibration but if I have to, I'll switch over to a mild shock if needed. I needed submersible since I have spent a small fortune in collars that say they are waterproof but they are not. So that's the primary reason I got this one since my one dog loves to swim. I also wanted one remote for the 3 dogs to call back as needed since I can't just yell out to them. So for those things, it's an awesome system. (10/19/2021)- Great ProductBy:Austin Samsa
Training manual was very helpful. High quality overall, wouldn't buy any other collar. (7/7/2020)- Great ProductBy:Lora Daniels
Have used other training collars in the past that were not very reliable. Spent a little more money this time and purchased this collar and it was well worth it! My Irish Setter responds very well and so far have only needed to use the tone option. We use it mostly for keeping her within close proximity while outside on our lake property. We had trouble with our Lab running off in the woods and were afraid someone would steal him or shoot him. We don't worry about that anymore. We have only had to actually shock him twice the rest of the time we can call him and use the tone if he doesn't respond. He will turn and come right back to us. So glad we bought this product. (3/16/2019)- So far so goodBy:Megan Ballweber
The quality seems very nice and I've only used it a few times, but so far so good. The one thing I am disappointed about (but couldn't find in a higher-end trainer) is that the Vibrate and Shock options share the same buttons. With our training we use the beep and vibrate as an increasing warning system, which has worked well (we've had a couple cheaper trainers in the past with separate buttons for all three options that worked fantastically, but the quality was such of those trainers that they didn't last long). The problem with this layout is that I can't quickly go from vibrate to shock when in an urgent situation (i.e. when our dog gets too excited and is about to knock the baby stroller over) so the shock option is almost useless to me most of the time. With the separate button setup I've had in the past, it's been super easy to get his attention back even after he gets worked up because I didn't have to look down at the remote or make adjustments that took time. Works great in the field and in the house. Charges quickly and holds charge for multiple uses. Definitely worth the money! (5/6/2018)- works wellBy:Rob Cheney
I have only used the collar 4 times so far, and it seems to work as advertised. The hand book and video are excellent, they explained things I had not thought about. (4/17/2018)- ExcellentBy:Judy Nydell
This is a great product for me. My labradoodle responds to the beep and so far I only had to use the vibration twice.he is walking right by me without searching the bushes for rabbits so far so goof! (3/5/2018)- Works great. Charger sucks By:Pamela Seina
Plugs to charge it are cheaply made and difficult to charge, sucks. Should be a droid plug and done.
Everything else is great. Wonderful controls. (1/17/2018)- Recommend itBy:James Routh
The 425 collar has worked very well on our g.s. He is pretty hard headed, but the collar has done it's job. (10/21/2017)- Solid and good lookingBy:Peter Niit
As usual they ask for these reviews i really too early for a true evaluation. Hence the 4 stars. I bought this before talking to my dog trainer. He had another company recommended. From what I can tell this one looks better and more solid. Where it is short is the intensity adjustment. 0-9 is too little. Need a bit more fine tuning. On the other hand I bought this one for the range. I want to be able to apply a correction when the dog is playing 'catch-me-if-you-can' during a recall command. I have not tried the extended range yet and take the products description's word for it. BTW - Also like the tester that came with it. very helpful to determine it is working without using my finger. I work with electrical products and get shocks regularly. I do not need the added shocks here :) (6/6/2017)- works well easy to useBy:jean halligan
easy to use and works well (4/10/2017)- GREAT PRODUCTBy:H. A. (Butch) Charlton
Works well with both of my dogs. I like the ability to adjust the amount of the correction or to turn it totally off to only a vibratioin. Dogs learn to respond quickly. Collars could hold their charge a bit longer. (3/21/2017)- Great product!By:Diane Schultz
Very happy with the collar and great customer service! Good information on web site, excellent instructional manual. (3/6/2017)- Great product!By:Sarah Gallagher
Love this collar and remote. My dog responds really well with just the audible, and it's nice to have the buzz when I need it. The collar doesn't seem at all uncomfortable. I'd absolutely recommend it! (3/5/2017)- Works greatBy:H A (Butch) Charlton
Great product, works as advertised. Took a bit to figure out the programming of the additional collars, but once you do it, its fairly easy. I would buy again. (3/4/2017)- Best Decision Ever. Perfect!By:Chris Hawthorne
I've used products in the past (10 years ago), and this collar is above and beyond my expectations. The customer service end is incomparable to all others. The staff was so helpful and understanding with my questions regarding the in's and out's of how the collar worked / operated. My lab knew certain commands like "here" "no pass" and such. I gently integrated the collar into her daily regiment, and she took to it like it was her job! 3 beeps means "Come Here" the vibrate function means a warning. I rarely have to use the "Zap" feature of the collar. I initially walked around my perimeter and if she passed the boundary I would use level 1 pulse. Ultimately, I have only used level 1 zap, 3 times since I have owned the collar. She responds magnificently, and would recommend this product to anyone that is trying to train their dog! Properly using this collar as a tool will allow your k9 friend to roam without the worry of being compromised. 10 star rating! (6/22/2016)- Great productBy:Kerry Williams
Really like this product and my dog is very responsive to minimal correction (4/11/2016)- Works as expectedBy:Christopher Sowers
Training our 7 month old Golden to stay in or fence less yard has been a very easy task. This is very easy to use, instructions are clear and make sense. Within a month our pup is yard trained. If a fetch throw goes over the sidewalk, she stops, sits and waits for someone to get her ball! (11/23/2015)- great systemBy:Bill Tarpley
I've been using this collar for the last 6 months on my border collie, and this thing is a workhorse. It's never failed me yet, and it gets beaten around a lot from its daily use. I use it when we do the rounds through the farm, and my wife uses it around the house (she's done most of the training). Couldn't have asked for a smarter and well behaved dog. Thanks for recommending this remote collar to us. (7/4/2015)
