GPS dog fences — custom boundaries anywhere, no wire required

GPS dog fences use satellite positioning to define your dog’s boundary — no wire to bury, no transmitter to plug in, no circular limitations. You set the boundary on a handheld device or smartphone app, and the receiver collar your dog wears enforces it automatically. When he approaches the edge, he gets a warning. If he keeps going, a static correction follows. The boundary exists wherever you set it, not just in your backyard.

This makes GPS containment the most flexible category on this page. It works on large rural properties where an underground fence would take days to install. It works on oddly shaped land that defeats a circular wireless fence. And because the system is completely portable, it works anywhere with GPS signal — on the road, at a cabin, at a campsite, or anywhere else your dog goes with you.

Is GPS right for your situation? GPS fences work best on open properties 3/4 acre or larger. Dense tree cover, large metal structures, and heavily built-up areas can reduce GPS accuracy near the boundary. For flat suburban yards under 3/4 acre, a wireless fence will be simpler and less expensive. For any yard shape or size where you need a wire-defined perimeter, an underground fence gives you more precision.

Which GPS fence is right for you?

We carry two GPS fence systems, and they serve different buyers.

The PetSafe Guardian GPS is a home containment system. You set up a boundary around your property using the My PetSafe app, and it stays there. No subscription, no monthly fees. The AccuGuard™ technology combines GPS with real-time motion detection to improve boundary accuracy. It supports up to 5 dogs and the rechargeable collar lasts up to 3 days per charge. If you want GPS containment for your home property without ongoing costs, this is the straightforward choice.

The Border Patrol TC1 is a different kind of system entirely. It combines GPS containment, short-range dog tracking, and a full remote training collar in a single handheld unit and collar. Set a boundary anywhere from 15 to 800 yards, track your dog’s location up to 2 miles away, and train with the same remote — all without switching collars or systems. It’s the better choice if you travel with your dog, use it on large rural properties, or want one device that handles fence and training in one.

Training your dog to a GPS fence

GPS fences require the same structured training approach as any containment system, but with one additional consideration: GPS accuracy has a small margin of error near the boundary. For this reason, both systems here recommend setting digital fence posts or marking the boundary with physical flags so your dog has a visual reference during training. Plan for at least two weeks of consistent, short daily sessions before removing the visual markers.

Start with tone-only mode before introducing static correction. Walk your dog on a long lead near the boundary, let him experience the warning tone, and redirect him back toward the center. Once he reliably turns back on the tone alone, you can transition to regular boundary enforcement. Dogs trained properly to GPS fences respect them just as reliably as underground or wireless systems.

Common questions about GPS dog fences

Do GPS dog fences require a monthly subscription?
Neither system on this page requires a subscription. The PetSafe Guardian GPS is a one-time purchase with no ongoing fees. The Border Patrol TC1 similarly requires no subscription — the GPS is built into the handheld unit with no cellular service required.

Will a GPS fence work in heavy tree cover?
GPS signal can be weakened by dense forest, heavy canopy, or large metal structures near the boundary. Both systems work best in open areas. If your property has significant tree cover close to where you want the boundary line, set the boundary several feet inside the tree line to account for signal variance, or consider an underground fence for those sections.

Can I use a GPS fence while traveling?
The Border Patrol TC1 is fully portable and can be set up anywhere with GPS signal in minutes. The PetSafe Guardian GPS is designed primarily for home use — it requires initial setup via the My PetSafe app and is best suited for a fixed location.

How accurate is the GPS boundary?
Both systems use GPS satellite positioning with an accuracy of approximately 3–10 feet under normal conditions. The PetSafe Guardian GPS adds AccuGuard™ technology — combining GPS with real-time motion detection — to reduce false corrections and improve boundary reliability. Setting the boundary a few feet inside any road or hazard is always recommended as a safety buffer.

What’s the minimum property size for a GPS fence?
The PetSafe Guardian GPS requires a property of at least 3/4 acre for reliable performance. The Border Patrol TC1 can be set to a radius as small as 15 yards, making it usable on smaller properties or for creating a contained area within a larger space.
